Does it Feel Like You’re Sinking?

Indianapolis metal band The Contortionist released a music video for new single, “Early Grave”, a soulful, melancholy track concerning the prevention of suicide, and serves as a reminder of hope. Frontman Michael Lessard delivers such soothing, simplistic, subtly harmonic vocals; perfect in adjacent to a unique sounding chord progression. The Contortionist proves again how they can make a song sound intricately heavy and dark without blaring vocals- as they soften their “metal”edges down to something even alternative radio could play.

Though, their progressive guitar solos are never sacrificed at the expense of their radio-friendly catchiness. I had soon realized this true power after being blown away by 2017’s LP “Clairvoyant”. Their balance of aggression and beauty is rarely as perfected as what The Contortionist has done these past ten years. One thing I love is the intro to “Early Grave”: “We dedicate this to everyone who has shared their story with us”. It makes you feel valued to be part of their fanbase.

Come get your sleep
And in a wake breathe deep
Cause when this all fills your lungs
You’ll feel just like you’re sinking stone
Oh, it happened to us all
When we lose control, we lose control, we lose control

The life that you chose where the dirt cloaks your bones

And I know it feels like you’re drowning these days
And I know you question if it’s too late
And my only hope is that you choose to stay
Cause you’re more than an early grave

Does it feel like you’re sinking? (Don’t sink, don’t sink)
The hurt that you showed in every word that you spoke

And I know it feels like you’re drowning these days
And I know you question if it’s too late
And my only hope is that you choose to stay

Don’t be too proud to say
That you are alone, lost and afraid
Think about your pride
Just know your doubt is misplaced

I know it feels like you’re drowning these days
I know you feel like you can’t be saved
And my only hope is that you choose to stay

And I know it feels like you’re drowning these days
And I know you question if it’s too late
And my only hope is that you choose to stay
Cause you’re more than an early grave
